Some of you may have seen my posts over the summer stating the fact that I was working out with my son on GBI for the summer break (for us Jun-Aug). His goals were to get into better shape for hockey season. He and I did the same lifts, with different weights, and then he'd do a lot of additional cardio for his cardio conditiong (mostly HIIT), while I did steady-state cardio for weight loss.
Well, I hope I don't jinx him (not that athletes are superstitious or anything), but the hockey season is half over, and he's leading the entire league in points. He was selected as the Captain on an "expansion" team for the league that needed help. The team is truly horrible, excepting a few kids like Aleks. But, because the talent drop off is so steep, he is getting TONS of ice time. That means he's getting banged around a lot and has to be in much better shape than in years past. And, even with the other teams knowing he's the "guy to stop", he's still able to get the job done.
He now realizes that all the lifting in the summer really DID help (for a while he didn't see the true need for all the upper body work, as hockey is mostly leg-intensive). But now he realizes how much stronger he is, it's much harder for them to knock him off the puck and he can skate through checks that would have floored him a year ago. And, that leads to more scoring opportunities...and, that of course leads to more goals.
This is his senior year in High School and he's looking to finish on top of the league and I have no doubt that GBI played a big part in helping him do that.
